Two Professional Athletes, One Marriage

Today is my beautiful wife’s birthday and she turned 23! Since it’s her birthday I wanted to give you guys some details on how we met and what we are both currently doing today.

How We Met

I’ve learned through sports that if  first you don’t succeed, try again! I would love to tell you guys that I asked her out and she said yes and the rest was history, but it wasn’t! I first saw Shea in the weight room at the end of my sophomore year in college at BYU.

I was just about to tell one of my teammates that I was gonna she if she wanted to hang out, but before I could my teammate told me he was about to ask her out!

I decided to sit back and let my teammate strike out before I would try again. A few weeks later I saw her again in the weight room and I was feeling extra brave that day so I asked her if she wanted to do an ab workout with me and she quickly responded no!

To be honest I was shocked she said no and I was even more shocked with how fast she said no, but again sports taught me that if at first you don’t succeed, try again!

A week or so later during finals week I was studying in the student athlete building where we would study as athletes. I saw Shea again and this time I got to talk to her for about 5 minutes and during this 5 minutes I helped her get out of a date she said yes to that was right during the middle of finals!

Unfortunately no numbers were exchanged or plans set so finals were taken and she went home after finals and I went on vacation with my family.

During vacation with my family she posted a picture on instagram and I commented on your picture and she commented back and before I knew it we had plans set to go out when I got back!

We went out on our first date and I took her bowling because we had a recruit in town and he brought his wife so a few of us guys needed dates for this recruit’s activity. After Shea saw my beautiful form in the bowling alley the rest was history and we got married 15 months later!

Again remember if at first you don’t succeed, try again!

Two Professional athletes and One marriage

Balancing out being professional athletes and being married can be tough at times. Shea runs for Nike’s Oregon Track Club in Eugene and I play for the Dallas Mavericks in Texas.

Living apart isn’t ideal and easy, but we have grown even closer through the process. It’s been cool for the two of us to see each other live out their dreams. It was amazing to see Shea sign her deal with Nike and to see all the hard work she did pay off and she can say the same when I signed my deal with the Dallas Mavericks.

Shea is currently in Oregon training and competeing around the world and I am in Dallas playing for the Mavericks and we have about 23 games left in our season. Since it’s All-Star break I’m in Eugene right now and I have been able to spend a week down here with Shea during the break.

Although we aren’t always together we are always supportive of one another and we each value each other’s dreams no matter what circumstance we may be in with our sports. Our faith and marriage has kept us strong and helped us chase down our dreams! We may be chasing separate dreams right now, but we are building one eternal marriage!

Happy birthday Shea I love you!

Collinsworth has been one of my favorite Cougar b-ball players, but I didn’t know any details about his wife, so his sharing this with us was an awesome read.
