On the Road: 4 Flights, 2 Bus rides, and 4 games

Dec 5th-11th

On The Road

This week has gotten off to a good start so far and the week has picked up fast. On Sunday morning we practiced at the Dallas mavericks practice facility and from there we headed straight to the airport for our week long road trip. This Week I’ll be writing on the road since we won’t get back home until Sunday. We got into Des Moines, Iowa Sunday afternoon and we spent the rest of the day just kicking it in the hotel and finding food to eat. My room dog is Jameel Warney aka Stony Brooks finest aka walking bucket. We just two mid major cats trying to get back to the NBA. Jameel is on the healthy wave right now I think some of my healthy eating habits have rubbed off on him lol.

On Monday (5th) we had our game against the Iowa energy. On game days we will have a team meeting in the hotel at 10 a.m. and we will watch film of our opponent and at 11 a.m. then we will go to the gym and walk through their plays and get up some shots. After shoot around I usually order room service, but this hotel didn’t have a restaurant so Jameel and I went to Applebees. Not my favorite place to eat nor is it the healthiest, but we didn’t have a lot of options. I ordered a chicken breast with broccoli so it turned out to be pretty healthy. Besides eating I usually just stay in the hotel and kick it and lay low. Around 5 p.m. we will head to the game and I get some work in with the trainer to get loose when we get to the arena and then an hour before tip off I get out and got up my shots and stretch out. I come back in the locker room and roll out and stretch more and spend about 10 minutes relaxing my body and close my eyes and visualize good things happening during the game. During the game I played well and stayed aggressive. I’ve been having a lot of success crashing the offensive glass and giving my team second chance points. I finished the game with 12 points 7 rebounds and 3 assists, and 3 steals. Solid game and was happy with the way I competed and played. Everyone on the team played well.  We had 7 guys who scored in double digits, which is always good to see. After the game I get a stretch with my Trainer Anthony. I really try to stretch out my hip flexors and hamstrings after games. I have always felt that stretching post games is the best way to recover. After stretching I fill up my hyperice knee compression to ice my knees. After the game we went to the Cheesecake Factory as a team and hung out there for awhile. It was a good time laughing about the game and catching up with all my teammates. It’s always hard for me to sleep after games so I just try to hydrate and relax in my bed until I fall asleep. Good day today and I felt I got better.. Catch you tomorrow…

Tuesday- The toughest part of the D-league is the travel for sure. Most of the time on the rode we have to wake up early to travel to our next game. We woke up at 6:30 a.m. and headed to the airport and we got into Ohio around 2 p.m. I went to this Italian place when we got to the hotel with Jameel and C.J and then I came back and too a little nap before we went and got shots up at 5 p.m. Since we play tomorrow today is more about recovery than anything. The rest of the night I’ll be watching college games and chilling. Jameel is over here watching his college highlights talking about how he was a walking bucket at Stony Brooke. “I could walk on the court with jeans on and dress shoes and score 15 points easily.” He is a clown, but he is right he can go get a bucket. Jameel was with me in training camp with the Mavericks and that goes way back to August and we also played together in summer league so I’ve known him for awhile. He is my room dog on the road and the guy I hang out with the most on the team. Today has been a long day with all the travel, but got shots up and stretched out and got my lift in for the day. I lift 5-6 times a week for about 30-35 minutes each lift. I never lift long, but I do lift a lot cause I want to keep my muscles strong and active. A lot of people lose a lot of muscle during the season cause they stop lifting. You don’t have to lift like you do in the offseason, but I try to lift almost everyday so I can keep all my muscle and keep my weight up. The challenge so far has been keeping my healthy eating up. We get into some of these places and there is no where to eat! This road trip I brought a bunch of healthy snacks and as always I have my protein and supplements with me. Today was a travel day and recovery day and it was good to rest up before our game tomorrow.

Wednesday- Today is another game on the road. We will be on the road all week, which means staying hydrated and eating healthy can be a little more tough but you can always find a way if you really want to. We had shoot around and film today at 10 a.m. It’s always good to get up and get shots and get the body moving a little bit. Nice to get up and have breakfast too, always got to have a good breakfast on game days. Today was like most game days just go back to the hotel and chill and get some food until the bus leaves at 5 p.m. It’s so important to find your routine as an athlete and find the things that warm your body up and get your mind focused and ready to go for the game. Ever since college I have got into a great pre-game routine and have stuck with it since. Find what works for you and stick to it.  In Today’s game we got down early and had a tough time closing the score. We brought it down to 3 with about 3:00 minutes left in the game, but we couldn’t pull it off. I had a huge fourth quarter and brought some great energy in our fourth quarter come back. Finished the game with 6 point, 6 assists, and 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. Learned a great lesson about showing up to each game with great energy and focus. You do so many workouts and practices to play games super important to take advantage of each opportunity you get to play. Tonight after the game we got on the bus and took a two hour bus ride to Erie Pennsylvania for our next game on Friday. Having my muscle stimulator has been clutch for these long bus rides and plan rides. We got to the hotel at 1 a.m. and I passed out when I got to the room.

Thursday- Today is gonna be a huge recovery day since we have a game on Friday night and a five hour bus ride after the game and a game on Saturday. Travel is super tough but have to find a way to make the most of it. Slept in today and got sleep while I could and just kicked it in the morning and ate and hydrated up. We had film and practice at 3 p.m. today and we kept it light and got ready for our opponent tomorrow. After practice I got in a lift at the hotel for about 30 minutes. I lifted my shoulders and core and did a little yoga to help recovery. I’m trying to be super consistent with lifting and stretching everyday. If you can stay in your routine on the road it will go a long way. We are going to be on the road for a week so it’s important that I stay in a good routine even on the road. The rest of the night I got some treatment from our trainer Anthony and got some food and watched the NBA games on TNT. Jameel and I played the whole J Cole album as well and I’m for sure a big fan of his new album! Catch you all tomorrow!

Friday- It’s game day! I’m excited to get out there and play and get past our last lost. Since we have a back to back and played on Wednesday we had optional shooting this morning and got up light shots at the arena. The hotel has breakfast down in the lobby so it was nice to be able to get a big good breakfast in. Like most game days I spent most of it in the hotel room chilling and relaxing. About an hour before we have to leave for the game I go down and get about a 30 minute lift, it’s something I’ve loved to do since college. Like I’ve said earlier I try to lift 5-6 times a week. When I was in College Bob Medina our strength coach told me that guys like Scottie Pippen would be in the weight room at least 6 times a week and with the time I was with the Dallas Mavericks I saw that for sure. In order to be a pro you have to take care of your body and put in the work. Today’s game was good because we won no mater individual stats it’s always a good game if you can come out with a Win. It was tough for me to get in an offensive groove tonight, but I rebounded well and played good defense. One thing I’ve learned is when you play great you can’t get too high and when you don’t play as well as you would of liked you can’t get too low. Don’t get too high or too low! Right now we are taking a 5 hour bus ride and the key for me is to keep a positive mindset and get some rest. We are driving through the night to our next game in Fort Wayne, Indiana so we probably won’t get to our hotel until like 3 or 4 in the morning. We play tomorrow and it’s a back to back and the last game of our 4 game road trip. Like a said earlier the travel in the D-league is crazy. When I was with the mavs we were in a private jet with sushi, fruit, food, and seats that reclined all the way back. Wish me luck as I take on this four hour bus ride! Thank goodness for this wifi on the bus so I can write this post and answer some comments on the blog. Overall it’s  been a great day and I’m just blessed to be able to play basketball for a living. I’m excited to get back on the court tomorrow and play.

Saturday- The four hour bus ride turned to seven hours because of a snow storm so we got to the hotel at 5 a.m. and I went back to sleep until 11:30 a.m. and woke up and got some food and then we just chilled until the bus came for the game. It was a tough game to get up for and find energy because we played yesterday and had that seven hour bus ride the night before. We got off to slow start during the game and we played down the entire game. We made a push towards the end of the game and brought it within eight points, but we could never get it closer than that. Tough game and a long road trip, but I learned a lot through this week. I learned it’s important to not get too high or too low. Tomorrow we fly back to Dallas, Texas and I can’t wait to get back home!

Sunday- Finally made it home and I’m going to sleep! Bye!
