What is Functional Medicine?

“Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

Instead of asking, “What drug matches up with this disease?” Functional Medicine asks the vital questions that very few conventional doctors ask: “Why do you have this problem in the first place?” and “Why has function been lost?” and “What can we do to restore function?”
Functional Medicine views us all as being different; genetically and biochemically unique. This personalized health care treats the individual, not the disease. Functional Medicine is deeply science based. The latest research shows us that what happens within us is connected in a complicated network or web of relationships. Your body is intelligent and has the capacity for self-regulation, which expresses itself through a dynamic balance of all your body systems. Your body has the ability to heal and prevent nearly all the diseases of aging. Health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of immense vitality. In other words, Functional Medicine looks to find the root cause or mechanism involved with any loss of function, which ultimately reveals why a set of symptoms is there in the first place, or why the patient has a particular disease label” (www.drlundell.info).

My Experience

For years It was hard for me to breathe out my nose during games and training. I thought maybe there was a problem with my nose and I would need surgery to fix it. I decided to go and get my blood work done at Dr Lundells office to see if maybe I had any food allergies that were causing the problem. After a visit with him and checking  my blood work he told me that I was allergic to dairy. I quickly got off dairy and the problem soon went away. A problem I thought might require surgery was as simple as removing dairy from my diet. I continue to see Doctor Lundell to make sure my body is in balance and that i’m not short in Vitamin D or anything else in my body. After seeing him he has gotten me on the right supplements and diet that has increased my athletic performance. My energy level has never been higher!

Common Complaints. Doctor Lundell says the three most common complaints he hears in his office are;  low in energy and always tired, can’t loose weight, and mood disorders. Doctor lundell says these usually are the result of a hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, environmental exposures and poor gastrointestinal health because of poor diet.

Pregnancy. Another cool part about Doctor Lundell is he is very good at helping women get pregnant. A lot of women have struggled to get pregnant.  My cousin’s wife spent a ton of time trying to get pregnant as well and my mom recommended they go and she him and she was able to get pregnant.  Check out this blog post by Doctor Lundell about pregnancy.  http://drlundell.info/can-balancing-hormones-help-with-infertility/
