Exercising in Nature is one of the best combinations for our body and mind. In my opinion, you can’t compare doing the stair master in the gym to hiking a mountain. The mountain is more challenging, but also much more rewarding. When you hike a mountain you always have the view at the summit of your hike and it makes every step worth it.
Exercise is something we all need to do to help us physically and mentally, which is why I think it’s important to find fun ways to exercise! Exercising doesn’t mean you’re stuck in a gym lifting or running on the treadmill. You don’t have to go on the treadmill and run 3 miles and do the same stuff over and over. Remember exercise should be fun with a little sprinkle of pain at times.
Using nature doesn’t mean you have to go on a huge hike or jump in a lake, it just means being outside. You can do things like walking around the neighborhood after dinner, or walking before, during, or after work. The key is to be active throughout your day and to be outdoors as much as you can. The combination of being outdoors while being active can promote great health benefits physically ,mentally, and spiritually! In order to make exercise fun it’s essential to use nature as your gym. Nature has a way of not only making us stronger physically, but also mentally.
Here are so ways to be active and make exercise fun!
This is one of my favorite ways to exercise because it’s a full body workout. It is also very easy on the mind because it’s so fun. When it comes to paddle boarding there are some options to keep things fun. You can stand up and paddle around the lake for as long as you want or you can do a bunch of different exercises on the board.
- Kneel on your knees and swim with your arms
- Sit on your butt and put legs straight and swim with your arms
- Lay on stomach on swim with your arms
- Stand up and squat on board and hold position or paddle while squatting low
- Do different variations of push ups.
- Do Ab workouts
Sometimes I even like to do push ups on the paddle board and abs exercises on top of all the paddling and different swims you can do with your arms.
There are many different ways besides just standing up and paddling to get exercise on a paddle board. If you are afraid you won’t be able to stand up don’t let that stop you from trying. You can kneel down or sit down and paddle.

Hike in the mountains
Hiking in the mountains is great exercise and its very relaxing and refreshing mentally to be outdoors. Whether you are hiking slow or fast being up in the mountains is great, because of all the incline and decline parts.
I love to run in the mountains and run straight up the face of mountains for an intense incline exercise. Whether you walk, hike, or run being in the mountains has unlimited benefits for your health. It is a great place to go to let your mind be free.

Its always fun to get a 2 man canoe and go with your spouse or friend and have a good time gliding across the lake or ocean at a pace thats comfortable for you. I like to race across a lake and time how long it takes to get to the other side and each time we try it again, we try and beat our time.
It’s a fun way to get intense exercise on your arms, back, and core. Again just being outdoors is super good for you and gives you time to enjoy God’s creations and free your mind. I found being outdoors makes me more grateful as a person as well.
Play a sport with family and friends
For many reasons getting together as family and friends and playing a sport is a great thing to do. Growing up we would play wiffle baseball in the background and have games that would last for hours. This was great way to let our bare feet be on the grass and get some exercise while being outdoors with family and friends.
I know a lot of families and friends also like playing ultimate frisbee at parks close to their homes. Whatever you do being outside and active with family and friends is very good for the body and mind.
I know for me I just flat out get sick of running and even walking so I like to switch things up and jump on my bike. Biking is a great change up for the body and creates a lot less pressure on your joints. If you prefer roller blading then do that as well!
Always remember to be safe and wear your helmet!
Swimming is a great way to take take pressure off your ankles and knees and get a different kind of work out from running and biking and other exercises. You can also do pool workouts and run in waist deep water and do jumps and all sorts of exercises. Get creative and have fun working out in the water!
Laird Hamilton who is a progressional surfer has some amazing pool workouts that can increase your breathing and your strength. His workouts in the pool are challenging, but very refreshing becasue it’s just something new! Laird Hamilton’s pool workout
If you live by a beach spent as much time as you can running, walking, and moving on a beach. The sand has a way of making things much harder, which increases your strength from spending time on the sand. If you don’t live by the
beach find sand at a volleyball court outside or any place you. The sand combined with creativity can be a very intense and powerful workout!
